The culture behind Missions to china:

-Abe no nakamaro
-Jian hen
-Kukai
-Ashikaga Yoshimitsu

Earliest Encounter:
Some encounter between china and japanese kingdom that was ruled by a queen.
Many confucian scholars make fun of the queen. To the chinese any one who is not chinese is barbaric.
Cultural biaseness.
They dont understand about the kingdom due to cultural lenses.
The people in the kingdom love to bathe but the chinese envoys dont. The chinese envoy feel like the people in the kingdom are barbaric but the people in the kingdom dont feel that way. -> more friendly to the chinese envoys
There are immigrant and many other encounters around after the year 300.
Many people escape the change in the china kingdom by fleeing to japan or korea.. Bringing their culture with them.

We wont be able to understand the logic of certain culture due to our culture lenses.

Kenzuishi:

Prince shotoku referrers to japan as land of the rising sun and sui dynasty as the land of the setting sun. The sui are furious as they feel like the japanese are like barbaric and they are saying that they are better

Abe no Nakamaro:
-Is an envoy to the tang dynasty.
- He passes the examination to serve in the china national service
- He became a bureaucrat in japan
- He was 17 then
- He wants to go back to japan but he cant due to being shipwrecked.
-He was made governor of vietnam and live out his life in china
- He was friends with some chinese poet


Jian zhen/ GanJin
-Come to japan
-Priest from Yangzhou
-Inv to got= to japan
-> studies medicine.
He only manage to successfully go to japan after the 7 attempt
He wanted to go to japan.
He brought buddhism to japan

Kukai:
He had a humble origin.
-Studies confucius and taoism.
- He found buddhism interesting but didn't understand it completely.
He plan to go to china to to learn buddhism.
-Join the ship to china
-Met huiguo, a great chinese buddhist monk.
-Kukai brought back 42 sanskrit ,142 buddhist sutras, 32 commentaries and 5 mandalas etc. Mandala are maps of the universe.
By 894, theres no more point for japan to send envoys to china as its expensive and dangerous. They brought back text about buddhist and writing and poetry. Japan has all that it needs and learn what it wants. China is in disorder.
Japan begin to develop its own culture.
Sugawara no michizane doesnt want to go to china due to a power struggle. He was the governor of dazaifu. He dies there.

The Muromachi period:
Informal trade and mongol invasion with closed trades.

He reunites the two imperial courts.
He decides to reach out to the ming dynasty to begin trade.
Theory:
-Trade is good and makes money to build up the military
-Preparing to replace the dynasty with his own dynasty

Began trade mission with china but china is not really eager with trade with china.
In return for trading.. Japan have to be part of china.
Yoshimitsu is the king of japan under Ming emperor.

Missions took cooks, engineers
People bring back craft items, pottery and books from china. -Karamono(things from china)
People bring back coins from china.
Japan imported fans and sulfur.

Think about before tutorial:
-Introduction of chinese economic elements for cultural political to japan.
How is this different for any of the cultural exchanges today?
